A slick new "Visibility Index" opened recently on the web and you should try it today. It measures your website's visibility online by counting up all the links to your site. But rather than simply telling you how many links you have across the world wide web, this one rates you from "limited presence," to "contender", "player" and even "900 lb. gorilla." The site also lets you enter up to four other URLs so you can compare yours to them. What's more, the results show your URL among lots of popular sites on the web.

Believe it or not, there is a way to get your site in front of searchers affordably...and almost immediately! AdWords allows you to buy advertising on Google's search results pages. Your ad will appear in one of the colored boxes lined up along the right edge of the page under "Sponsored Links".

If you have access to your web site's log files, you will quickly find an interesting phenomenon. Your site is being visited a lot more often than you think it is. In fact, if you look closely you may be shocked to find that your HTML files are actually being used to harm you and others. In fact, you may be seeing the footprints left by some of the tools used by unscrupulous spammers to steal your email addresses.

There is now a product on the market which does a superb job of eliminating not only advertisements, but also pop-up banners, cookies, sounds, Java and JavaScripts. Just to give you an idea of how well this product works, I cleared the statistics, then surfed for 5 minutes to 8 web sites. A total of 5 ads were removed! Wow.

What I usually do when I'm doing research is quickly try the major search engines (Google, Altavista, Lycos and Hotbot) to see what they pull up. Then I move to Yahoo, DMOZ (Netscape's directory) and Looksmart.

Don't get mad, get even [Web]

There are few subjects which will produce as heated a discussion as spam. Unfortunately, the answer usually seems to boil down to "just delete it". That seems simple enough, but it does not have anywhere near the satisfaction as a photon torpedo or a high explosive round from a field artillery piece! A couple of weeks ago someone sent me an email and mentioned a place called "Spamcop". I investigated and guess what? Here is your photon torpedo!

One Message Can Shut You Down [Web]

Late last Friday afternoon I made one last email check before leaving for the weekend. Much to my surprise there were nearly 1000 email messages waiting in my inbox. It was from angry netizens - all recipients of unsolicited email. No, not spam from me, but spam that caused a nightmare for me none the less. And it shut down the site that was responsible, before they even realized they did anything wrong. Here are the sordid details...
